The Healing Journey: From Pain to Authenticity

I haven’t been great, if I’m honest.

(And let’s face it — when have I ever sugar-coated things?)

Right now, I’m deep in it.

In the chrysalis.

In the pause.

In the uncomfortable, holy mess that comes just before something shifts.

Brené Brown speaks about the courage it takes to enter the wilderness — that vulnerable, uncharted space between who we were and who we’re becoming. That’s exactly where I find myself now. And truthfully? Courage is the last thing I feel.

The truth is: my needs have changed.

I’m worn down.

Not just tired — bereft.

Beaten, burdened, grieving in ways I’ve only half-acknowledged. Like most of us, I’ve masked and managed this inner ache to keep life moving — for the kids, for the job, for the world. But eventually, the tsunami hits. And this one nearly took me under.

I’ve come to realise that numbing out, popping pills, or powering through isn’t the answer.

The pace I’ve kept — frenetic, relentless — is unsustainable.

Must. Outrun.

Can’t. Stop.

Catch that midnight train — anywhere but inside my own head.

But the truth caught up.

I’m shattered.

Every part of me aches.

And I cannot keep pretending I’m okay.

I don’t need more treatment — I need more space.

More insight.

More time to fall apart gently, and begin the slow, sacred work of rebuilding.

So I’ve called in the big guns — and by that, I mean me.

For the next two months, I’m stepping away from the noise.

Not just to beaches and mountaintops, but into the deeper kind of wilderness — the inner kind.

The one where you face the parts you’ve tried to outwork, outpace, or out-numb.

And learn to listen.

Brené reminds us: “Belonging to ourselves means choosing authenticity over approval.”

That part of me — the one who knows when to stop, who listens inwardly, who honours intuition — has been buried beneath mortgages, school notes, emails, and the ever-accelerating rhythm of modern life.

Now I find myself flung off the spinning roundabout — dizzy, disoriented, gasping for breath.

And so I begin again.

Not with a to-do list, but with a surrender.

Eight weeks.

It’s a gift, yes. A privilege.

But also gut-wrenchingly painful.

Because to truly meet yourself again, you have to let go of all the ways you’ve survived so far.

I’m paring myself back to raw.

No image. No armour.

No more autopilot “I’m fine, thanks.”

There’s no ego left to protect. Just me — stripped bare.

Vulnerable. Sore. Hopeful.

And somehow, still willing.

Because even though this season hurts, I believe it’s shaping me —

Not in spite of the pain, but through it.

I’m starting to feel the edges of who I’m becoming:

Wiser.

Calmer.

More rooted.

Less frantic.

More me.

And if you’re in your own wilderness right now, I want you to know —

I see you.

Don’t rush the becoming.

It’s okay if you’re not okay.

It’s okay to unravel.

“Pain is unrelenting. It will get our attention. Despite our attempts to drown it in addiction, to physically beat it out of one another, to suffocate it with success and material trappings, or to strangle it with our hate, pain will find a way to make itself known.”

Brene Brown, ‘Braving the Wilderness’.

Yes, it hurts.

But this — this sitting in, learning from, and launching through the pain — this is transformation.

One by one, the layers need to be shifted, shed, and surrendered.

This isn’t the kind of healing you can rush.

It doesn’t come with bullet points or breakthroughs on demand.

It’s slow. Subtle. Sometimes brutal.

But it’s also sacred.

So if you’re here too — in your own messy middle — I just want you to know:

You’re not behind.

You’re not broken.

And you’re not alone.

We weren’t made to hold it all together all the time.

We were made to be human — honest, tender, evolving.

There’s no map for this part. Just small truths.

Soft landings.

And a willingness to keep turning inward.

Maybe this wilderness we find ourselves in isn’t a punishment,

but an invitation —

to return to ourselves,

to what matters,

to what lasts.

So rest.

Breathe.

Unravel if you need to.

I’m here too — becoming alongside you.

We’ll find our way.
One breath. One truth. One layer at a time.

I’ll meet you on the other side.
